Dierbaren
Saskia Gubbels — The Netherlands — 2020 — 73’
This film’s stars—animals and humans alike—are scarred and in pain. Each tries to overcome their heavy burdens with the meager means at their disposal: they bark, attack, rage wildly, run, hide, or shrink in terror. But just like in a fairytale, in this animal shelter in Amsterdam, love conquers all. This love grows slowly, carefully nurtured by both parties. It grows thanks to the caretakers, who refuse to give up even when met with extremely aggressive dogs, anxious cats, or birds that seem beyond reach; and thanks to the animals, who learn to trust humans again. The animals get exceptional care, and in return, the caretakers and future pet owners get unconditional love.
